Wallie: A new one?

Katy: I’m imagining it as a spoken word with music, dance, and minimal acting.

Wallie: So, basically a musical . . . Performed by the 4th grade.

Katy: No.  Performed by you and others.  On stage.  No audition required.

On Wednesday, May 5th, Raquel texted Scott Haze to see if we could use The Sherry, the theater on Magnolia Blvd. named after his mother.  ​For the last decade or so, Scott Haze had implored Raquel Starrrr to star on his stage.  He’s also an actor, and I’m a Virgo.  Unless I receive ​verbal or written confirmation, smoke gets in your thighs.

There are approximately 20 theatres in the Noho Arts District, the largest number within one square mile outside of New York City.  I called The ​Secret Rose Theatre, next to Nigel Beauty Emporium, on Magnolia.  According to local artist Max Bussell, Amelia Earhart once worked for ATT ​on the corner of Magnolia and Bakman.

Across the street is the Greyhound Bus station, and the backside of Lankershim Elementary, where Marilyn Monroe attended as a 6th grade ​student.

Rick Shaw: The Secret Rose is closed.  Most of the local theaters are shut down.  Just out of curiosity, what’s your production about?

Katy: High school. High school reunions, high school funeral for a friend.  Virgins and trans girls who are the living end.

Production Treatment

Attached is the work in progress of "Elephants Fall From the Sky," which includes Mac's "Shine a Light."  I envision the production as “Our ​Town,” the finale from “All That Jazz,” and “Veneno,” just for starters!

June 25th, I popped up to Sacramento to attend my one and only niece’s Holy Names University graduation party. Madison Raye Monahan ​earned her Master’s in Forensic Psychology, and wrote her culminating paper on Jim Jones. The family calls her, “Young Katy Monahan.” I ​stayed at The Citizen, where Michelle McNamara would hole up to write “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive search for The ​Golden State Killer.” Whilst there, I ordered room service and punched up the elusive Scott Haze' Academy Award winning film, “Minari.”

Paul Storiale remained behind, as we walked three doors down to the Hungry Habanero.  He shortly split for Wyoming, and Scott Haze hired ​David Dickens in his stead.  David Dickens, an actor, was also running NoHo’s Whitmore Lindley Theater, and The Brickhouse, located behind ​Modern Pamper Salon, nail painters of the Kardashians and Salma Hayek.  Lily, Modern Pamper’s owner, would later scold me for not holding ​the production in her hip hop, and what used to be a wig shop.

We pushed outside tables together, and ordered tacos and beer.  Scott pointed to the Living at NoHo apartments across the street, where he and ​James Franco had been long time roommates.  Gaga rents there now.  His corner apartment, above Spumante Restaurant and White Heat Yoga, ​affords a stellar view of The Sherry.

I strolled to Josie’s Flowers to select my weekly Stargazer Lillies. When the owner, Sylvia, asked how I was, I showed her a pic of the Elephants ​poster.  Sylvia immediately suggested I place one in the florist window.

A day later, Sylvia and I happened to be getting our mani/pedis done at the same time.  Este from Haim fame and an entourage of handsome ​gentlemen walked on by outside Dream Nails.  Sylvia told Jenny I was an actress, and that she should post the Elephants “flier.“  Jenny easily ​agreed, and posted two that are still up months after the production.  I am not an actress, but I am always in trouble if I forget to bring in the ​three nail tools she has provided for clients in a Ziplocked baggie, for the small fee of $5.00.

Jordan, the owner of White Heat Yoga, said she might have to hire a babysitter.

For NoHo Copy and Print, it was a no brainer to post their product in the front window.

Andrew created the @elephants_fall, and I created the @nohoartselephants Instagram while eating pasta at our fave neighborhood restaurant.

Wallie and I parted ways with Gaga after dining at St. Anne’s.  Strolling by The Sherry, I spotted a cute crew in the front patio, sparking cigs.

Close to the 6:00 P.M. showtime, Katie Royal told me not to panic.  Jayson’s camera was not working.  “He had backups upon backups.”  We ​quickly enlisted the magical Pan, who filmed both the six and eight oclock shows. Pan, a New York Film Academy student, also took it upon ​herself to edit the film, and cut a teaser.

UCLA Writers Workshop: Jeff Duclos‘ Feedback:

Hi Katy,

What can I say? I didn’t fully understand what you were doing with this material in the last workshop, That’s on me. I get it now. It’s brilliant. ​Enriching. Unsettling. Breathtaking. Heart wrenching. Illuminating. Challenging. At times surreal. Important. So important.

It reads a bit like a timeline at first. Then a journal. An allegory. A sight that needs to be seen. I was finally able to see it as the amazing ​performance piece it is. One that I could imagine in my head.

I love the use of rhyme scheme. Like this special poetic rap. Language like a secret handshake.

“High school.  Highschool reunions, high school funeral for a friend.  Virgins, and trans girls who are the living end. “Fine.”  “Somebody pass ​me a mirror, cuz I ain’t got much time.”  Where the Hell’s my Wine?”

We didn’t care, we didn’t wear underwear.”

You have this way of being provocative, with these image-filled short statements and it’s so you. It creates a distinct narrative style that is ​unsettling in the best of ways. The piece is filled with great descriptive paragraphs. Here’s one of my favs.

“Fast cars drag race late nites over the hill to Hollywood flashing by the red neon signs of Johnny’s Auto Body and the Colony Inn, rife with sin.  ​It bills itself to tourists as the ‘Hotel Near Universal Studios.’”

Or, Wallie’s “Become aware” speech and the line “The more passable you look, the safer you are in society.” Key points that lead to ​understanding. Or, Raquel’s statement, “make the night count to make the day survive.”

What a great break for me to get a second chance to see your vision.

UCLA Writers Workshop: Shawna Kenny’s Feedback:

Cool to peek a bit behind the scenes to see what it took for you to pull all of this together (in a short time!) The fact that you could do so 1—​speaks to your own intrinsic genius and 2—illustrates the community that you all share. It’s a scene, it’s a family, things fall together when you ​focus your attentions on one another/the greater good.

That is punk as fuck!

Also liked following the texts to tell the backstory (though some might be missing). Pastiche, like the production.

Dearest Katy,

Bravo bravo bravo!!! What an incredible show you put together. I feel so honored to have been a part of it and to have gotten the chance to ​see it! You were absolutely adorable on stage (Still can't believe how good your hair and pony looked!) and I loved the poetic stories you read. ​Wallie and Raquel blew my mind with their talent and it was so fun to see Riley performing in Mac's short and to hang out with Killian for a bit ​before the show and to see his Lili perform! Those dancers were incredible and your ticket mistress Jane was perfect as well.

My sincerest apologies that I have taken SO LONG to send you an invoice. I don't know why or how life has been this busy and I am so sorry ​to have put this on the back burner and to have left you hanging.

I'm so proud of you for putting on such a lovely show. Congratulations on a successful evening!

UCLA Writers Workshop: Jeff Duclos Comments on Revised Draft:

Hi Katy.

I look at this piece as a house being built that filled with lots of amazing people. They fill this beautiful, shocking, and song and laughter-filled ​living room. The rest is just a wooden frame of what could be. I like Coco’s comment about a graphic novel, but that we would be missing the ​singing and speaking sounds which are so alluring and powerful.

I look at it as a work that is coming to life in three acts, or movements.  My sense of order wants to see the planning for the show. The show. ​Then following the show, what has changed? What are the possibilities about to unfold? With KTVision in charge. Thornton Wilder’s “Our ​Town,” narrated the stage manager speaking directly to the audience, setting the scene and characters came to mind.

Katy:  . . . does your troupe ever consider acting/producing other people’s work?

David Dickens:  Everyone acts in projects that are outside of our group.  We love to let people roam and do their thing while allowing them to ​have a home-base with us when they need it.  As far as producing others work, I sometimes do, but definitely have a specific brand and we ​always have about five or six projects backlogged and ready to tackle . . . I even try to get outside my own company to act ha-ha.

Katy:  Okay. Good to know.  Perhaps we could have a conversation . . .

I’m on The Four Twelve floor, gazing out the sliding glass door. Surveying my Queendom, I spy with my side eye Raquel swathed in sweats, ​obviously on her way to Mr. Jimmy’s. I wait until I see her return to The Social, then go to the front door to say, “Hey.” I wait some more. The ​elevator finally opens up, and out struts Raquel, not dressed in blend in bland, but black sweater sparkles.

It was like . . . I had conjured her falling from the sky. She hugged me tightly, wished me Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and ​introduced me to her mother, visiting from Mexico for the holidays.

Katy: The Elephants Backdrop is almost finished.

Raquel: Let me know. Maybe we can read it together.
